Radiocast: What to Bring to the Emergency Department

Rand: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. No one expects to get sick or be in an accident, yet Americans make more than 120 million visits to emergency departments each year. AHRQ Director Dr. Carolyn Clancy offers tips for getting high-quality care:

Dr. Clancy: Good health care depends on your clinicians having accurate and thorough information about you and your health. The emergency care staff needs to know about any medical conditions or illnesses you may have, such as heart disease or diabetes, and any surgeries or treatments you’ve received. They also need to know about medicines you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter, and herbal medications. Stay involved in your health care. Taking an active role in your care right from the start is the best thing you can do to reduce your risks of a serious error and improve the overall quality of care you receive.

Rand: Healthcare 411 is produced by AHRQ, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I’m Rand Gardner for Healthcare 411.
