Radiocast: Gestational Diabetes: A Guide for Pregnant Women

Debra: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. Seven of every one hundred women develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy. A new consumer guide from AHRQ helps women compare their treatment options. AHRQ expert Dr. Shilpa Amin explains:

Dr. Amin: Treating gestational diabetes during pregnancy is very important. AHRQ’s guide explains some treatment options, including changing one’s diet and taking insulin or oral diabetes medicines such as glyburide or metformin. It also gives women some advice for after their pregnancies, such as having their blood sugar monitored regularly since they have a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Women can use the guide to talk with their clinicians about which treatments and follow-up care are right for them.

Debra: Get a free copy of the guide at effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov. Healthcare 411 is produced by AHRQ, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I’m Debra James for Healthcare 411.
