Radiocast: High Blood Pressure Medicines Show
Promise for Treating Heart Disease
Debra: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. New
research by AHRQ shows two medications used to treat high blood pressure may
also be effective in treating a condition called stable ischemic heart disease,
which is a major cause of death in the U.S. Here to talk about the disease and
these medications is AHRQ researcher and pharmacist Dr. Carmen Kelly.
Dr. Kelly: Stable ischemic heart disease occurs when the flow of
oxygen-rich blood to the heart is restricted by narrowed or blocked arteries.
These patients are at risk of having heart failure or a heart attack. But a
recent comparative effectiveness report shows that patients who take ACE
inhibitors and ARBs can lower their risk of death, heart attack and stroke.
These drugs also lead to fewer hospitalizations for heart failure for patients
with stable ischemic heart disease.
Debra: This comparative effectiveness report is available online at
effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov. Healthcare 411 is produced by AHRQ, the Agency
for Healthcare Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services. I’m Debra James for Healthcare 411.
