Radiocast: Obesity in America
Rand: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. The
percentage of overweight and obese Americans among all population groups has
steadily increased. An AHRQ-funded study shows nearly 90 percent of American
adults will be overweight or obese by the year 2030. Study co-author and AHRQ
researcher Dr. Lan Liang explains:
Dr. Liang: Being overweight or obese is dangerous and associated with many
health issues including diabetes, heart disease and stroke. In fact, research
seems to indicate future adults may actually have shorter life spans than the
current generation due to these issues. Clearly more has to be done to educate
the public and especially minority populations on the risks of obesity.
