Podcast: Managing Diabetes
Rand: From the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, I’m Rand
Gardner with Healthcare 411: Information for Better Health. More than 16 million
Americans have diabetes, but many of them are not getting all of the health care
exams they need to manage their disease and prevent future problems. These tests
include an eye examination, foot test to check for poor circulation, and a blood
sugar test. Researcher Anita Soni explains:
Ms. Soni: According to our analysis, only a third of the 16.5 million
Americans with diabetes get all three exams. Our research also shows that adults
under the age of 65 with private health care insurance are twice as likely as
those without insurance to get these three tests. This data is valuable because
these exams are important steps to preventing complications for people with
diabetes.
