Radiocast: Basic Health Tips for Men
Debra: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health.
Rand: Men’s Health Week is June 15th to the 21st, and the U.S. Preventive
Services Task Force recommends three basic things men should do to stay healthy.
First, talk with your doctor about what screening tests you need.
Debra: For example, prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in
men, but recommended screening tests differ according to a man’s age and risk
factors.
Rand: Second, your doctor can advise you whether there are medicines you
can take to prevent disease.
Debra: Should you take aspirin to prevent heart disease? Are you current
on your immunizations?
Rand: The third recommendation by the Task Force: live a healthy
lifestyle.
Debra: How? Exercise, eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, and
if you smoke, quit.
Rand: Check out the men’s checklist online at
ahrq.gov/consumer.
Debra: Healthcare 411 is produced by the Agency for Healthcare Research
and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. I’m Debra
James.
Rand: And I’m Rand Gardner for Healthcare 411.
