Radiocast: Comparing Erectile Dysfunction Drugs
Rand: This is Healthcare 411: Information for better health. An
AHRQ-funded project reviewed scientific studies evaluating the benefits and
risks of several prescription drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction, a common
sexual disorder. Lead reviewer Dr. Alexander Tsertsvadze of the Ottawa Hospital
Research Institute in Canada explains the findings:
Dr. Tsertsvadze: The good news is there are several oral medicines that
work, including Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis. But given the reviewed evidence, we
still can’t say which medicine works best. So clearly we need more
well-conducted long-term studies to identify the best treatment management
options for different groups of patients. For example, we need more evidence
from trials comparing hormonal therapies to oral treatments in men with erectile
dysfunction and low levels of testosterone. This will help doctors and patients
make the most informed decisions about which option is best for them.
Rand: Healthcare 411 is produced by AHRQ, the Agency for Healthcare
Research and Quality, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
I’m Rand Gardner for Healthcare 411.
